Facebook Has Gone Nuclear & Banned Australian News Sites From Sharing…Anything

In what must be terrible for news for those of you that like to write “who??????” in the Facebook comments of an article about an artist who isn’t old, male and white, the social media giant has restricted any Australian from posting news links.

The change also means that Australian news outlets’ Facebook pages are being blocked from sharing anything at all, and Australian users will be unable to see any news, whether it be Australian or international.

This comes after the federal government’s news media code, which Facebook’s Australian and New Zealand managing director Will Easton said “misunderstood the relationship” it shares with publishers.

“The proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content,” Easton wrote in a blog post earlier this morning.

“It has left us facing a stark choice: attempt to comply with a law that ignores the realities of this relationship, or stop allowing news content on our services in Australia. With a heavy heart, we are choosing the latter.”

The blockage is being rolled out as we speak, with news pages – including Music Feeds‘ – being completely wiped of content.

“We hope that in the future the Australian government will recognise the value we already provide and work with us to strengthen, rather than limit, our partnerships with publishers,” Easton wrote.

In case you were wondering, yes – The Betoota Advocate and The Chaser have been hit too. Zuckerberg shows no mercy.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
