Hizbul Mujahideen operations chief Dr Saifullah has been killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar by security forces on Sunday.
Inspector-General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar told India Today TV that Saifullah, the chief commander of terrorist organisation Hizbul Mujahideen has been killed while one militant associate has been apprehended alive in the encounter that took place in the Rangreth area.
Earlier, reports said that a joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Srinagar’s Rangreth. Two-three militants were believed to be holed up in the area.
As the joint team of forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the security forces, triggering off a gunfight. In the ensuing encounter, Saifullah Mir was gunned down while one of his associates was captured alive.
Incriminating material, including arms and ammunition, was also recovered from the encounter site.
RIYAZ NAIKOO’S SUCCESSOR KILLED IN SRINAGAR ENCOUNTER
Saifullah Mir alias Ghazi Haider alias Doctor Sahab had joined Hizbul Mujahideen in October 2014 and hails from Malangpora in Pulwama. He was recruited by Riyaz Naikoo and given the name Ghazi Haider.
He took over the leadership of the Hizbul Mujahideen after Riyaz Naikoo was killed in an encounter in May this year.
Saifullah had topped the list of top 10 most wanted terrorists in Kashmir that was recently prepared by security agencies. He was also wanted in several cases of militant attacks.
Congratulating security forces on eliminating a big terror threat, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbagh Singh said, “Congratulations. Chief HM commander Saifullah who took over after Riyaz Naikoo’s killing is eliminated in a police operation in Srinagar city on a hard Int generated by police. He was the person behind the killing of three BJP workers two days back. A very big success.”
