Josh Warrington was unexpectedly knocked out by massive underdog Mauricio Lara on Saturday night in London.

The Brit, who vacated his IBF featherweight world title last month in search of bigger fights, accepted a tune-up bout when his planned contest with Can Xu fell through.

However, it far from went to plan.

Warrington started poorly from round one and found himself being caught flush by his unorthodox opponent.

Despite being slow-handed, Lara was troubling the Brit throughout the early stages.

And in round four, he made the breakthrough.

A combination staggered Warrington and a giant left hook sent him crashing to the canvas.

The Leeds man just about rose to his feet and was allowed to continue by referee Howard Foster, despite looking near-certain to be stopped.

He made it to the bell by the skin of his teeth and remarkably survived the round.

Even at the start of the fifth he looked unsteady, but Lara failed to capitalise and Warrington edged closer to regaining composure.

Rounds six and seven were nip and tuck, then the Mexican appeared to again hurt the Brit in the eighth.

The end came in round nine as Lara staggered Warrington again and a gigantic left hook from the underdog flattened the favourite.
