Look forward to working together: PM Modi congratulates US President-elect Biden, VP Kamala Harris

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated American President-elect Joe Biden in a tweet just after midnight. Democrat challenger Joe Biden, who was VP to Barack Obama, won the American presidency with 290 Electoral College votes as per latest estimates.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Congratulations @JoeBiden on your spectacular victory! As the VP, your contribution to strengthening Indo-US relations was critical and invaluable. look forward to working closely together once again to take India-US relations to greater heights.”

The Prime Minister also congratulated US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris who made history by becoming the first woman to hold the second-most significant position within the American Executive.

“Heartiest congratulations @KamalaHarris! Your success is pathbreaking, and a matter of immense pride not just for your chittis, but also for all Indian-Americans. I am confident that the vibrant India-US ties will get even stronger with your support and leadership,” PM Modi said in a tweet.

The Prime Minister last met Joe Biden in Washington on September 30, 2014, when the latter was vice president to Barack Obama.

“There are certain problems. You use a system which is 120-volts, and we use 220-volt system in India. So 120 and 220 – when you have to bring them together and the difference in the energy which is there, so we’ll have to undertake necessary steps in order to bring it together, and I’m sure we’ll succeed in it,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi who took office earlier that year had said while addressing Biden and the then secretary of state John Kerry.

PM Modi had added, “Then 120-volt and 220-volt system – both the systems will start working together, and that is how I am standing here amidst you.”

President Ram Nath Kovind also congratulated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their victory.

In a tweet, the President of India said, “My sincere felicitations to Joseph R. Biden on his election as President of the United States of America and @KamalaHarris, as Vice President. I wish @JoeBiden a successful tenure and look forward to working with him to further strengthen India-US relations.”

Congress president Sonia Gandhi also extended her best wishes to US President-elect Joe Biden and US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

In a statement issued by the party, Sonia Gandhi said that “under the wise and mature leadership of President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect, Kamala Harris, India looks forward to a close partnership that will be beneficial to peace and development in our region and around the world.”

“Congratulations, Vice-President-elect @KamalaHarris! It makes us proud that the first woman to serve as Vice President of the USA traces her roots to India,” former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also congratulated the new president and vice-president-elect.

She tweeted: “Congratulations to President Elect @JoeBiden and Vice President @KamalaHarris May the India-US friendship grow”.

Sharad Pawar, president of National Congress Party also tweeted, “Congratulations to President-Elect @JoeBiden and Vice President-Elect @KamalaHarris, on their victory in the United States Elections”.

Former Union Minister and SAD leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal also extended her wishes. She tweeted, “Heartiest congratulations to US Vice President-Elect @KamalaHarris! Proud that a woman has broken the glass ceiling, and even more so for her Indian genes.Also, big congratulations to President-Elect @JoeBiden on his spectacular victory!”
