Ryan Garcia has told talkSPORT.com that he wants to ‘shock the world’ by dethroning Gervonta Davis after his next bout.

The highly rated American lightweight contender is due to fight Britain’s Luke Campbell in the first stern test of his career on January 2, live on DAZN.

If he wins this fight, Garcia will be mandatory for Devin Haney’s WBC lightweight title.

However, he instead has his eyes on another top young American.

When asked if his plan is to pursue Haney for the WBC title, Garcia told talkSPORT.com: “I could choose that, or I could choose to fight Gervonta Davis.

“Two guys I wanna fight, so I either wanna fight Gervonta next…”

At this point Garcia interrupted himself as he reconsidered his answer.

“Actually, I’m gonna be quite honest, I wanna fight Gervonta next. That’s who I want. I wanna take on that man.

“I’ve been calling it for a while and that’s the fight. That’s the fight that would make me great.

“That’s the fight that will complete the puzzle that I have put together. That’s who I want and that’s who I’m gonna be striving to get.

“I’m gonna give the people what they want and I’m gonna put a whooping on him – I promise you that.

“After this fight, that’s the fight I’ll be looking to have. There it is.”

At present there are four top young US talents hovering around the lightweight division.

Garcia has the biggest profile of the four, but is yet to reach world title level.

Davis also holds big commercial appeal and has won world titles at super-featherweight, as well as the WBA ‘regular’ belt at lightweight.

Haney owns the WBC title and Teofimo Lopez currently rules the division with all the other belts as he defeated Vasyl Lomachenko in October.

Gervonta was in action last month as he produced a devastating KO of Leo Santa Cruz.

This result caught the world’s attention and has seemingly only added more motivation for Garcia.

He explained: “Everybody’s scared, everybody fears something about that man.

“And to me it’s gonna be as easy as anything. It’s gonna be as easy as singing my ABCs.

“I promise you that’s the fight that’s gonna shock the world. I’ve been saying it from the beginning, I wanna shock the world.

“That’s who I’m coming after, big, bad ‘Tank’ – the man who hits so hard, the man that crushes people’s face in. That’s the fight that I wanna show everybody who I really am.

“After that I wanna fight Teofimo Lopez or Devin Haney or anybody, I don’t really care after that.

“Nobody matters as much as that fight with ‘Tank’. That’s the main fight.

“I’m looking at the bigger picture. Once I win that, you know what position I’m gonna be in? That’s the chess move to make.

“But, it’s a gamble, like everybody says, the man hits hard and we’ll see in the ring.”

DAZN’s going global – including finally launching in the UK. For British boxing fans, the DAZN app will be £1.99 a month to start and that one price will get them the big fights on any device, including Jan 2 Garcia vs Campbell.
