Cape Town – Kaizer Chiefs head coach Ernst Middendorp has lashed out at goalkeeper Virgil Vries who committed another costly error in a 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City on Wednesday.
Despite dominating most of the encounter with a number of chances to falling striker Khama Billiat in the first-half, Chiefs were left empty-handed after a mistake by Vries was punished by the away side.
Middendorp failed to hide his disappointment at the manner of defeat suffered by the Glamour Boys saying it was unacceptable to concede in such a way.
“Conceding a goal like this is definitely not acceptable,” he said. “It happened against Sundowns (defeat after a Vries error) where it was unbelievable to lose that game and now again it happened and again it’s unbelievable to lose here.
“We have this goalkeeping issue, but on the other side of the pitch we did not take our chances.”
The 29-year-old goalkeeper, who has been drafted in to replace the injured Itumeleng Khune said that he wouldn’t allow the error to affect him too much and would learn from it.
“It’s not just me who plays alone,” He said. “We play as a team and these things happen but I need to reflect on my mistakes and in times like these I just need to keep on smiling.”
“But also we could have taken the game with the chances we had in the first-half.”
