Miler Sam Prakel has been the model of progressive development. The 5-Time All-American out of Oregon now turned Pro has seen his 1500/Mile times drop steadily over the past few years, sending a shockwave in 2019 with an indoor Mile time of 3:50.94 in Boston’s New Balance Grand Prix.

Now, with the event moved this year to Ocean Breeze, Prakel has unfinished business.

I am very excited to head back to the Ocean Breeze indoor track for the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix 1500m. The last time I was on Staten Island was for the 2019 USA Indoor Championships at Ocean Breeze where I placed 4th in the mile. I remember loving the facility and felt like the track was very fast. The championship mile in 2019 was tactical, so we weren’t able to truly test out the speed of the track. However, this time around we’ll have a hot pace set for the field and aim to put up some fast marks as we look build momentum toward the Olympic trials and Olympics this summer. The field is made up of some of the best milers from around the world and lining up against an international field like this is a great opportunity for me.

My preparation this winter has been going smoothly. I opened up last week with a 800/mile double and have continued to sharpen up in workouts. I feel like this is the best shape I’ve ever been in for this time of year, so getting an indoor PB is definitely the goal.”
