Tyson Fury has warned Billy Joe Saunders that he needs to be more active in order to beat Canelo Alvarez.
The close friends have grown up together in the traveller community and are now on top of the boxing world – both champions in their respective weight classes.
Fury previously took advice from Saunders ahead of his fights with Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder, and now he has offered the same for Billy Joe’s expected challenge of Canelo.
Saunders has agreed terms to face Mexico’s pound-for-pound king in May.
However, Fury has publicly appealed to his friend to take another fight first and be more active to ensure victory.
He told Gareth A Davies: “Billy Joe Saunders can beat any middle/super-middle in the world, but he needs to be active and the one thing he’s not been is active.
“Billy Joe, no middle or super-middle has got a chance with him when he’s active, just like no heavyweight’s got a chance with me when I’m active.
“But the good old cliché with me and Billy Joe Saunders is we’re never active.
“We’ve had more inactivity in our careers than we’ve had activity.
“He’s had one fight against Martin Murray in I don’t know how long.
“He needs another fight and maybe another one after that.”
Canelo recently defeated Callum Smith in December and is now due to face Avni Yildirim on February 27.
He would be going into the Saunders fight on a great run of activity.
In contrast, Saunders beat Murrary in December but, before that, had not fought since November 2019.
Fury concluded: “He needs to be active and he will punch Canelo Alvarez all round the ring.
“Canelo’s kryptonite is someone who boxes and moves, southpaw. Slick, good feet, good hand speed, good power.
“Billy Joe Saunders does all of that, but he needs to be active.
“Billy Joe needs another fight or two, forget about the money, forget about everything that’s going on, people pushing you, it’s about winning.”
