Guterres congratulated President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and reaffirmed that the partnership between the United States and the United Nations is “an essential pillar of the international cooperation needed to address the dramatic challenges facing the world,” his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The U.N. chief also congratulated “the American people for a vibrant exercise of democracy in their country’s elections,” the spokesman added.

Biden has declared victory in the U.S. presidential election that took place last Tuesday and most world leaders have already offered congratulatory messages to the former U.S. vice president, though Republican incumbent Donald Trump has not accepted the result.
