England spinner Moeen Ali delivered a piece of magic which left India talisman Virat Kohli quite simply astonished before India fought back to 300-6 on day one of the second Test in Chennai.
On his return to the side, Moeen clean bowled arguably the greatest batsman of this generation for a duck, leaving Rohit Sharma
to dig the hosts out of trouble with a magnificent 161.
India, who were reduced to 0-1 after the early dismissal of Shubman Gill, were on the verge of collapse when the wicket of Kohli left them on 86-3 – and the captain could hardly believe it himself.
Despite having his stumps wrecked by Moeen’s ripper through the gate, Kohli refused to walk and even asked the umpire to show a replay on the big screen before eventually leaving the crease.
It’s the first time in his career the master batsman has been dismissed for nought by a spinner – and the onlooking fans in Chennai were left stunned.
A fourth-wicket stand of 162 from Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane saved the day for India, although three wickets in the evening session meant the day still belonged to England.
Moeen and Jack Leach finished the day with two apiece, while Olly Stone and Joe Root both grabbed one each.
